Why Porsche Taycan Is Faster Than Tesla

Here's Why The Porsche Taycan Is Likely Faster Than Tesla Model S
The Porsche Taycan Turbo S may be quicker than Porsche claims.
Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - goo.gl/VZstk7
The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has a claimed 0-60 of 2.6 seconds, and a top speed of 161 mph. The Tesla Model S Performance has a claimed 0-60 of 2.4 seconds, and a top speed of 163 mph. Well that settles it, the Tesla is faster, right? Not so fast. When you start to look at the two vehicles drivetrains, you'll find the Porsche might actually have an advantage as a result of the transmission.
The Taycan has two gears for the rear axle, and a single gear for the front axle. The rear gear ratios are 15.563 for first, and 8.05 for second. The front axle also has a gear ratio of 8.05:1. To see which vehicle is faster, we'll need to see which can put down the greatest wheel torque, as well as which has the most grip.

So as it turns out, Top Gear had a drag race between Taycan and Model S, and their VBOX measured 0-60 was 2.68 for the Tesla, and 2.61 for the Taycan. Obviously road conditions limiting the launch, but still over 1 g acceleration. For me, it’s super cool to see why this happens, and that the numbers line up (traction will generally be the limiting factor in these comparisons, which is why it’s critical for the two cars to be tested at the same time on the same surface). Happy new year everyone!!

Hope no one's remotely surprised by the fact that Porsche's secret sauce was geared transmission...For a performance focussed vehicle it's a no-brainer and offers up a great challenge to Tesla. The more competition there is in the EV space, the happier I'll be - love seeing these new kids on the block making moves on ICE turf. =] Manufacturer rivalry is great for consumers, and in the case of EVs creates great publicity to accelerate the market transition towards electric propulsion.

  • Peter Wagner

I haven't read all 1,988 comments, but I didn't see any mention of your mathematical slight of hand in box 4 on your whiteboard. You can't simply "average" the two torque numbers together. The car indeed accelerates by 30MPH during both periods of interest, but the TIME spent in each period is different. The lower torque rating of 1.03 should have higher weight. This is an example of the classic brain teaser: A car travels for 10 miles at 40 MPH and then 10 miles at 20 MPH ... was is the average speed? (Answer isn't isn't (40 + 20)/2 !)

Its all theory given g over 1 is limited by the traction anyway (from a standing start, there is no aero in play, and bu&&er all up to 60/100). But who cares about drag races that will be decided by tyre choice; the Taycan will have suspension that gets it around corners, so will be more enjoyable - both on track and on the road. And its a better place to sit; Porsche actually consider ergonomics in their design process, rather than trying to just be cool with new innovation (that never really worked). Now all I need is for someone to lend me one of each so I can try them out.

It is nice to see your objective analysis on the vehicles. Something rarely discussed about electric vehicles is their performance over track and not just a simple drag race. For instance, if there were a race between Tesla, taycan and other EVs over 50 laps or so, how stable and consistence do you think their performance will be? How do we even measure this engineering skill. I would like to know your thoughts.

I find it kinda funny that Porsche with the added complexity of a 2 speed transmission barely beats 5 year old Tesla with direct drive. Call me a fan-boy but I'd not choose 2 speed transmission over direct drive unless 2 speed transmission car is at least 50% faster. Even if Tesla makes 2 trims one with direct drive one with 2 speed, I'd choose direct drive.

Well, we certainly know why now, and it's actually worse (from Tesla's standpoint than you guys all realized) in The Real World. The Model S, has lost every race we're familiar with vs the equivalent Taycan. Currently, it stands at 5 in a row, with the latest being Auto Zeitung and Car and Driver where the Tesla's not even competitive acceleration wise in certain criteria, and barely hanging on in their "competitive ones". Meanwhile (at least with the current C&D comparison) the Porsche displayed similar consumption and range despite it's weight penalty and outright performance advantage over it's Model S counterpart. This video should be updated, now that we have more real world info vs internet Bench Racing.

Hi Jason A friend and I were chatting about benefits of an EV and obviously the environment and CO2 emissions are well documented which I think stands at 2.3kgs of CO2 produced for every liter of fuel burnt. She then asked me what the oxygen savings are, which was interesting, in other words her take is that by not using combustible fuel you aren't burning air/oxygen and therefore that's a good thing. Her other question was what the average heat of a combustion engine is and how much that adds to atmospheric temp. These questions are best put to an expert like yourself to consider and I felt it might make for an interesting episode on your NOlocal channel.
