The world’s first production CVVD engine! CVVD stands for continuously variable valve duration. This technology is currently used in the 1.6L turbo engine of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata. In order to understand it we need to understand how valves work on an engine. Of course, you have the four engine strokes: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. Intake you have the intake valve open, obviously, and your exhaust stroke has the exhaust valve open. On the most basic of engines, everything about how these valves operate is fixed, because those valves follow the cam profile of a fixed camshaft.
On modern car engines, there are variables we can change; three of them, as it relates to valves. First, there’s variable valve lift. This means you can change how far down the valve travels allowing for more or less airflow into the engine. Second, you have variable valve timing, this means you can change when you actually open this valve, you can open it sooner, or open it later, relative to its standard timing. And third, and this is what Hyundai is adding into the mix, is variable valve duration. This is controlling how long you actually leave the valve open. You could have it open and close very quickly, you could have it remain open for a longer duration, or anything between.
Up until this point, no mass produced engines have actually been able to vary how long a valve remains open, relative to the engine speed. If you’re wondering about Koenigsegg’s freevalve, and we’ll discuss that in the video as well. So, how does Hyundai do it? Check it out!

    *UPDATE!* There was another engine which had variable valve duration (Rover, 1995). I asked Hyundai about this, and from one of their presentations: "Such method, which allows change in valve actuation by altering the rotational speed of cam, is thought to be devised by Mitchell [2, 3]. The Rover first launched the engine to the market in 1995 [4]. The Rover’s VVC (Variable Valve Control) system was applied to 1.8L inline 4-cylinder engine in order to change the intake valve’s timing and duration. VVC system requires four camshafts to drive the intake valve; two of the camshafts are driven by timing belt at the front of the engine, while the other two is driven at the rear of the engine by the exhaust camshaft. Because of such feature, VVC system cannot be used with CVVT simultaneously, impeding the independent control of the valve opening and closing timing." So in this case, the "world first" is the fact that it is the first production engine to combine CVVT with CVVD, as the Rover mechanism did not allow for variable timing.     @Bill Wood using valvetronic BMW are able to vary the valve lift to such a degree that a throttle butterfly is not required. It is accomplished by altering the rocker arm ratio. I seem to remember a figure of 20 mil sec to go from min lift (Idle) to max lift ( Full throttle)

    @백지호 Actually it is immediate and unable to vary from the mechanical variability. A better future system will allow for feedback response that allows for decision making like economy over horsepower under changing conditions (as driving modes incorporate now). This system is "fixed." If that worm gear were driven by a super quick stepper motor connected to either AI or driver (electronics) controls it would still be rather slow to go from one extreme to the other down to the gear ratio and stepper motor speed.

    Well I remember the GM Quad 4, the AMC 1.7lt , The 2.3 Vega engine, Ford 5.3 and such. These engines are excellent if simply the oil is changed on a regular basis, but the public often mistreats the powerplant badly often not changing the oil for sometimes NEVER. If maintained it should work fine, but the public will be the ultimate test, and the abuse they perform.

    Been using the similar ideas for 30 years. We well knew that the wilder (more overlap & lift) cams gave us more power/torque at higher RPM. Those wilder cams worked along with flow momentum to cram more fuel/air into cylinders at high rpms. Downside swapping in/out cams is pretty tedious when we wanted to tailor to a particular application. The variable duration will modify that intake/exhaust overlap on the fly to eliminate the lopey idle characterized by high perf engines from the 70's & 80's yet provide that high RPM torque/HP.

    All I can say is that given the complicated nature of this system, and with all of the small parts involved, you would be very wise to change your engine oil on a nearly religious regimen if you want a engine equipped as such to live a long and happy life.

    Hate to disappoint you guy. But that is plainly brilliant. I doubt very much if it will wear a bit faster than a regular cam shaft. Indeed its going to be a couple machine parts more expensive but those parts are not the cam lobes which are the most complex machining job. Everything else is just circles which are MUCH easier to machine. By replacing the joints in the diagram with just pushers they have reduced the wear on this unit greatly (yes, if you had the little bitty pivots that the model has your wear problem would be unacceptable). The primary problem remaining here is how can I post fit this to my old ford Crown Vic.....

    5% better fuel economy 4% better performance 12% reduced emissions Oof, 9 years of research for 21% better efficiency. Though it's an overall increase, I somehow expected more out of performance. I know tuning that thing's gonna be a nightmare.

    So the single solid cam shaft is now 40 separate pieces with a new worm gear rack setup for every cylinder. And this "totally mechanical system" is entirely dependent 17 sensors, 1/4 mile of wire, and a proprietary computer controlled servo motor. All for maybe a 4-5% improvement? Is this a joke?
