The Tesla Model 3 Performance is an exceptional performing vehicle, it's fast, fun, and full of new tech. I took my Model 3 for a 2,000 mile road trip, and on that journey, all was going well. That is, until we hit a pothole. If you can believe it, a single pothole cost over $2,600 to fix, and required 7 hours of time from start to finish, leaving the Tesla service center.
While Tesla isn't to blame here, low profile tires are becoming the new trend, and they're not any good in my book. They're expensive, heavy, and cause ride quality to suffer, all for what some feel is improved aesthetics, and perhaps some slightly more responsive steering. But the Model 3 Performance only offers one wheel size, so tires with less than 2 inches between the wheel and the road are the only option. Do any of you have low profile tires? How has your experience been?

Thanks for watching everyone! Lots of pothole fans, this is great! I try not to have a negative vibe in my videos, but I think some frustration probably shined through in my tone on this one. Hope everyone is having a wonderful, pothole-free day! If you want to experience expensive potholes - Tesla Referral Program: ts.la/jason66047

There's another way to improve stearing response of a high profile tyre... I pump up my 185 70 r14's to 43-47 PSI and you get the stearing response of a low profile, lighter stearing, while at the same time increasing resistance against pothole damage, increased load capacity, faster acceleration, better wet grip (hydroplaning) and better milage(hyper-miling)... Only downside being slightly lesser braking performance

Thanks for highlighting the issue of low aspect ratio tire hazards. I wonder if the new Induction and Uberturbine wheels for Model Ys, particularly the latter, were influenced by your experience. These designs move the transitions between spokes and rim out to the rim's outside lip, avoiding the cantilevered rim lips of your factory Model 3 wheels that failed.

So funny you can ask the state to pay for damages. I remember when I was younger my mum complained about a pothole out the front of our house. The state fixed it and in the process covered my mums car in tar. She complained and there response was, 'do you want a pothole or tar on your car?' Go Australia..

Not the pothole that caused this failure, but rather improper planning on the occurrence of road hazards. I learned, years ago, public road vehicles should be equipped to handle politically regulated infrastructure.

I killed 3 new low profile tires on Chicago potholes during just one year. My next car will have to be compatible with Chicago roads. Something like Jeep or Hummer I think.

I hit a curb and created a slow leak in my right rear tire. The next day visited Discount Tire and found out that the tire was unrepairable. They had to order a new tire from California which took 3 days to arrive. The cost of the tire and service was appox.close to $400. I also added insurance on all the other tires which brought the bill to a little over $500. I live in Arizona and if I got a Tesla Ranger involved it would cost a dollar a mile coming and going (not warranted). I also decided to purchase a spare tire kit ($450) since I didn't want to be stranded in the desert or miles away from help. Beware, if you live a distance from a service center the Ranger travel could cost you if not under warranry.

I had practically the same problem. TESLA should not sell cars with this option. Or they should cover it on the warranty. I'm leasing so aftermarket isn't an option. I'm afraid I'll be faced with the same situation again before I return this car. Will def research this more next time.

doesnt insurance cover it? here in india, we have something called 'comprehensisive' insurance which covers self inflicted damage to our vehicles, tires too. practically everyone opts for this kind and no, it doesn't really lead to as much fraud as one would think

What you should have done is filed a claim with your insurance company, signing over your rights to the sue for the damages. Then the insurance company would have bundled your claim with all the others from the state and then demanded payment. The state would then settle the debt with the insurance company. No reason for you to try to fight state, let the insurance company's lawyers earn their paycheck.

9:50 But what if you live in New Jersey and potholes are to be expected? Legally, it could be considered an “act of God”, but New Jersey is more prone to potholes and they may not be willing to hear your claim. It’s for this reason why there is ambiguity as to whether there is a higher standard for maintaining buildings to weather hurricanes in Florida and earthquakes in California.

Yes, the State can say they need to first receive legal "notice", in order to be responsible for the damages. But that's likely not the only way they could be culpable. In addition, the State certainly must have a regular schedule of highway inspections where deficiencies are noted. If they (1) Did not complete their scheduled inspection(s) on time, and/or (2) Noted the pothole, but did not fix it in a reasonable amount of time (couple of days seems typical) Say, they didn't fix it from their last report, or it's been noted for several weeks and still unrepaired, in these cases the State could be found negligent. You have nothing to lose, by asking Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for a copy of any such current and previous scheduled inspection reports, which may show the State had notice of the pot hole but did nothing. Maybe they'll tell you to pound sand, or maybe they'll realize it's public information and cough it up. You have nothing to lose by asking. IDOT (217) 782-7820 Edit- Dayum YT, reccomended me a video that's a year old! Sigh....

Short takeaway after 12 min: Don’t buy a Tesla. Used to drive an Audi. Was it good quality and really fun to drive? Yes. But after it got some miles on it and had some surprisingly expensive repairs, I found myself in dread of “what’s going to happen next?” EVERYTHING was so much more expensive to repair, replace, maintain, etc. Now drive Acura and can direct my angst to other matters.

I had the same issue last year on my bmw. 19 inch diamond cut alloys with brand new run flats. Hit a pothole, with a run flat with no give in the side wall at all. The energy went straight to the alloy and buckled it! It wasn't particularly deep either. Bmw wanted 850 pounds for a new alloy and tyre. This was with 19s! Hate to think what its like driving with 20s.
